Planting wildflower seeds, bulbs and native trees in Knights Hill Wood

2pm to 5pm Saturday 10th November 2018 Nature Vibezzz ran a free family nature activity in Knights Hill Wood, West Norwood, London. The session started with participants litter picking the woods, with their hard work  2 sacks of rubbish was removed from the woodland.

Rope swing, bug hunting equipment and drawing materials was made available for the children to use and enjoy during the session.

Following the litter picking participants seeded the woodland glade area with native woodland wildflower seed mixture. The seeds was mixed with sand to help participants see where the seeds had already been scattered and sown.

This woodland flower seed mixture contained wild flower species able to tolerate shade and is suitable for sowing in woodland areas.  The wild flowers are adapted to growing amongst established trees where shading has reduced light levels down to 25% of that in the open.  All of the wild flower seeds are of British native origin.   The mixture consisted of seeds from the following:

Bluebell  Hyacinthoides non-scripta, Betony Stachys officinalis, Red Campion  ilene dioica, Foxglove Digitalis purpurea, Garlic Mustard Alliaria petiolata, Hedge Woundwort Stachys sylvatica, Hedge Bedstraw Galium mollugo, Nettle-leaved Bellflower Campanula trachelium, Meadowsweet Filipendula ulmaria Perforate, St John’s Wort Hypericum perforatum, Ragged Robin Lychnis flos-cuculi, Ramsons (Wild Garlic) Allium ursinum, Selfheal Prunella vulgaris, Wood Avens  Geum urbanum, Wood Sage Teucrium scorodonia.

Then native woodland bulbs and rhizones was planted around the edge of the glade these included Bluebells, Snowdrops, Wild daffodils, Ramsons and Winter Aconites.

Native woodland tree saplings was also planting around boundary of the woods by the participants, the trees came from Woodland Trust free tree packs which included Hazel, Blackthorn, Downy birch, Hawthorn, Holly, Goat willow Crab apple and Dog rose trees.

The session finished with participants cooking and eating a healthy vegetable soup. The soup was cooked on a campfire with participants chopping wood for the fire and cutting vegetables for the soup.

On our next activity starting 2pm Saturday 17th November 2018 we will be continuing to plant trees around the boundary of Knights Hill Wood, please come and join us.

Free family activity session in woodland

2pm to 4pm Saturday 29th September 2018 Nature Vibezzz ran a free family nature activity in Knights Hill Wood, West Norwood, Lambeth.

The session invloved pruning trees to increase light into the site, helping increase biodiversity through encouraging a wider range of plants to grow and help make the woodland feel more safe for users. The pruned material was used to continue to build a dead hedge which will protect a wildflower glade which will be prepared and planted on future sessions.

Activities for children included making animal masks, drawing, making signs, climbing rope, rope swing, bug hunting, litter picking, photography and free play around the woodland site. Many of the children also helped with the tree pruning working together under adult supervision. The activity finished with a healthy fruit snack.

Next week the task will be run in TIvoli Park with Friends of Tivoli Park

Tivoli Park Orchard Care Afternoon: 2-4pm Saturday 6th October 2018

Adult tasks will include:

  1. Clear grass/weeds from immediate area around the base of each fruit tree
  2. Add mulch
  3. Cut/adjust some cages
  4. Label trees

Free Saturday nature activites in Knights Hill Wood and Tivoli Park

Nature Vibezzz free family nature conservation and forest school activities will re-start 2pm to 4pm Saturday 6th October 2018. Activities will take place in Tivoli Park and Knights Hill Wood West Norwood, Lambeth, London.

Familes continue to make improvements to local woodland on free activity

On Saturday 21st July 2018 Nature Vibezzz was joined by many families to help at Knights Hill Woods West Norwood London. Everyone helped to continue the dead hedge being made to protect the wild flower glade and create a habiat for small creatures and insects.

As well as helping build the dead hedge children attending enjoyed free play around the woods, making signs, rope swing, drawing and hunting for creepy crawlies.

The session finished with a healthy fruit snack.

Free woodland activity in West Norwood

2pm to 4pm Saturday 14th July 2018 Nature Vibezzz ran a free family nature conservation activity in Knights Hill Wood. The session involved continuing to make a dead hedge making a wildlife habitat and protect a wildflower glade. The children also enjoyed colouring, making animal masks, insect hunting, rope climbing, rope swinging and free play around the site. Participants also litter picked the site removing 2 sacks of rubbish.

Free family woodland activity

2pm to 4pm Saturday 7th July 2018 Nature Vibezzz ran a free family activity in Knights Hill Wood West Norwood London. The activity involved continuing to build a dead hedge by installing wooden posts to protect the woodland wildlife glade. Participants also enjoyed colouring, insect hunts, rope swings / climbing and playing in the woodland.

This nature activity finished with a healthy fruit snack.

Families making dead hedge to protect wild flowers

2pm to 5pm Saturday 23rd June 2018 Nature Vibezzz ran a nature conservation activity in Knights Hill Wood. The activity focused on installing posts around the wildflower area to make a permanent dead hedge to protect the flowers. The dead hedge will also create a habiat of it’s own for insects and other creatures helping to further increase the biodiversity of the site. Particpants of all ages took part in digging and filling the holes for the new posts. Particiapnts also litter picked the site removing 2 sacks of rubbish.

The children also enjoyed colouring, bug hunting and a rope swing. The session finished with a healthy snack that included fruit and veggie sausages cooked on a camp fire.

Making dead hedge to protect woodland wild flowers

2pm to 5pm Nature Vibezzz Saturday 16th June Nature Vibezzz ran a free family activity at Knights Hill Wood. On this session participants enjoyed rope climbing, rope swings and making father day cards, whilst helping the woodland site by litter picking and starting a new dead hedge to protect wild flowers. The first 2 wooden posts where put in place to start the dead hedge, with both adults and children helping dig holes and hammer the posts in place.
